Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is caused by the novel SARS-CoV-2 virus that infects the nose or mouth causing mild to severe respiratory disease. Although most recover without requiring special treatment, anyone at any age can get sick with COVID-19 and become seriously ill or die. Covid illness also results in missing school and important campus events, and some with seemingly mild illness will develop Long Covid. The first and most important step in preventing COVID-19 is to get vaccinated.
COVID-19 spreads when an infected person breathes out droplets and very small particles that contain the virus. These droplets and particles can be breathed in by others or get in through their eyes, noses, or mouth.
