Director's Welcome

The University of Cincinnati Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, comprises 31 pulmonary physician faculty members and 12 fellows, and is recognized as a national leader in education, research and clinical medicine. The U.S. News and World Report routinely lists the Division among the best in the country.

Clinical areas of excellence include Interstitial Lung Disease, Rare Lung Disease Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension, Interventional Pulmonary Medicine and Lung Cancer, Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease, Cystic Fibrosis, Critical Care Medicine and Sleep Medicine. Clinical trials with cutting edge therapies are offered in all of these arenas.

Division research focuses on the immune systems of the lung, pulmonary infections, mechanisms of smooth muscle action in asthma and maintenance of vascular tone, the causes and treatment approaches to lung scarring and the optimal management of emphysema. The Translational Pulmonary Science Center (TPSC), a joint effort between pulmonary divisions at Children’s Hospital and the University of Cincinnati, is dedicated to research that has the potential to impact human health. Recent TPSC accomplishments include the discovery of a new form of pulmonary alveolar proteinosis, a treatment for the rare lung disease, lymphangioleiomyomatosis, and recognition by the Clinical Research Forum for a “2012 Top 10 Clinical Research Achievement in the U.S.”.

The physicians in the division are honored to have the opportunity to care for patients and train medical students, residents and fellows at University Hospital and UC College of Medicine, which has been identified as one of the top 50 medical schools in the country. In addition to a clinical fellowship track in pulmonary and critical care training, the Division offers a research fellowship track with the potential for T32 training grant support and an interventional pulmonary fellowship.

Division members practice in the University Hospital, the Cincinnati Veteran’s Affairs Hospital, Drake Hospital, McCullough Hyde Hospital and West Chester Hospital. Pulmonary and sleep disorders are managed in outpatient clinics on the Clifton and West Chester campuses, as well as in Montgomery and Oxford. Division members direct three sleep laboratories, three pulmonary function laboratories and three bronchoscopy services. Examples of advanced techniques that are offered include altitude simulation testing, navigational bronchoscopy, endobronchial valve placement for emphysema and bronchopleural fistula, rigid bronchoscopy and bronchial thermoplasty.
