Curriculum/Schedule

The Department of Anesthesiology provides a one-year curriculum, as outlined by the American College of Graduate Medical Education and recommended by the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine. Each fellow will be an integral part of the clinical, academic, and administrative endeavors in regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine at UC Health. The fellow will learn through clinical experience, hands-on education with patients and simulation, scheduled didactics/lectures from primary fellowship faculty, and active participation in research and/or quality improvement projects. Through rotations at various sites, this program ensures the fellow will acquire sufficient levels of knowledge, clinical/technical skills and judgment to allow them to be competent in all areas of regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine. They will meet all the criteria to become a graduate from an accredited fellowship program and excel in the subspecialty in a private practice or academic setting.

Rotations

University of Cincinnati Medical Center (UCMC)

Inpatient Pain Service (IPS)

UCMC is a tertiary care institution that serves as the only academic medical center and Level 1 trauma center within the 50-mile radius of the Cincinnati Metropolitan area. UCMC provides trainees with the opportunity to care for patients of all ages (except pediatrics) at all socioeconomic levels. In addition to all of the surgical specialties and subspecialties, UCMC hosts the only regional liver transplant center, skull base surgery center, and neurovascular surgery center.

The fellow will spend 5 months on IPS at UCMC, where they will experience all aspects of acute and perioperative pain management with a diverse range of patients and surgical procedures. The fellow will lead the service by providing all patient with the optimal pain control plan, including performing the appropriate regional or neuraxial techniques. They will also round on all inpatients with indwelling catheters and lead their pain management perioperatively.  They will experience acute (non-operative), chronic, and cancer pain management by being the primary pain consultation service at UCMC.

West Chester Hospital (WCH)

The West Chester Hospital is a community-based hospital in the UC Health institution. During their 2 months at WCH, the fellow will have the opportunity to care for patients of all ages at all socioeconomic levels in a community setting. In addition to all of the surgical specialties and subspecialties, West Chester Hospital hosts valuable experiences in regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine. The fellow will be responsible for providing each patient with the best perioperative pain control, implementing the various regional anesthesia techniques available. They will also be instrumental in the pain service at the hospital, assisting all specialties with pain control for patients. The community hospital setting provides a great experience in preparation for a potential career in a high paced, large volume private practice environment.

Ambulatory Surgery Centers

• Holmes Hospital
• West Chester Surgical Hospital (The University Pointe)

The UC Health Holmes Hospital and the University Pointe are ambulatory surgery centers that serve as part of the only academic medical center in the area. They both host a variety of ambulatory surgical specialties and subspecialties. The fellow will spend 1.5 months at each site, focusing on ambulatory anesthesia. Each surgery center provides an excellent experience in care for patients in an ambulatory setting, with the fellow utilizing skills based in regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine.

Cincinnati’s Children Hospital Medical Center

The Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is a tertiary care pediatric institution that serves as the only academic pediatric medical center and pediatric Level 1 trauma center within the 100-mile radius of the Cincinnati Metropolitan area. The fellow will do a 2-week rotation at Cincinnati Children's Hospital, which provides trainees with the opportunity to care for patients of pediatric ages at all socioeconomic levels. In addition to all of the surgical specialties and subspecialties, Children's Hospital provides excellent regional anesthetic options and acute pain management training for all pediatric patients. Children's Hospital consistently ranks as one of the top pediatric hospitals in the country and provides the fellow with the best pediatric experience in the area.

UC Health Pain Management Center

The UC Health Pain Management Center is primary outpatient pain clinic within UC Health’s academic network. The Pain Management Center provides trainees the opportunity to care for patients with chronic and cancer pain, spanning all age ranges and socioeconomic levels. During their 2-week rotation, the fellow will assist with chronic pain interventional procedures. Each fellow will also gain experience and be trained in chronic pain medication management, including the various non-opioid options available to this patient population.

Elective

The fellow is given 1 month of elective time to choose from a number clinical, scholarly, or academic rotation(s) to tailor their fellowship experience to better suit their interests and potential future career needs. These opportunities include adding more of the already scheduled clinical rotations, time spent for research to develop scholarly activity, to non-regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine focused rotations to create a more diverse fellowship experience.
