Message from the Chief Residents

Dear prospective residents:

Welcome and thank you for your interest in our program. We are excited to introduce you to our categorical anesthesiology residency program.

At UC, we pride ourselves on our team. We are a smaller program, with eight residents per class, which creates a close-knit family. Residents and faculty share mutual respect and success as a common goal. Resident education is the primary concern among the faculty. We have access to nationally recognized faculty and expertise in all aspects of anesthesiology. Attending availability and support is outstanding. Outside of academic events, our strong camaraderie extends to both sporting and social events, often including family.

Our graduates pursue a variety of career paths. Recent graduates have obtained fellowships in pain medicine, critical care, regional, cardiothoracic anesthesiology and pediatric anesthesiology. Graduates also accept a variety of private practice and academic positions nationwide. Of our last year’s graduates, all eight graduates obtained a fellowship or at the practice of their choosing.

During the PGY1 year our residents experience rotations at both UC Medical Center and the VA (located across the street). These include internal medicine, neuroscience intensive care, cardiovascular intensive care, otolaryngology, emergency medicine and anesthesiology. In addition to the wide exposure to multiple fields, our residents get some exposure to the OR in their intern year, which eases the transition into CA-1 year. There are four weeks of vacation interspersed throughout each year of residency.

The CA-1 year serves as an introduction to general anesthesiology and multiple anesthesia subspecialties including obstetrics, neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, chronic and acute pain, preoperative clinic, and PACU. A unique feature of our program is that we introduce our CA-1s to complex and high acuity cases early on in their training. By the end of the year, our residents are well prepared to handle increasingly complex cases. 

The CA-2 year includes two months at the nationally renowned Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. A favorite CA-2 month is the regional anesthesia rotation designed to enable residents to gain more dedicated block experience in the setting of ambulatory surgery. CA-2 residents also spend time on the following rotations: SICU, vascular surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, obstetrics, preoperative clinic, night float and chronic pain. 

The CA-3 year provides for three months of elective that can include but is not confined to TEE, regional, critical care, pediatric or cardiac. Additionally, there is opportunity to participate in the provision of anesthesia abroad. Over the past several years, our residents have had opportunities to practice anesthesia in Belize.  There are current faculty members and residents working to establish new opportunities in other locations as well.  Obstetric anesthesiology, night float, critical care consult service, acute pain, ambulatory surgery and pediatrics are core CA-3 rotations.

One of the notable perks to our anesthesia program is internal paid shifts (also called internal moonlighting). Residents are able to supplement their income throughout residency while at the same time gaining additional anesthesia experience. This is available starting January of your CA1 year.

Our residency program allows ample time to enjoy life outside of work.  Cincinnati is a very desirable, affordable city. There are many activities for both single residents and families. Due to our milder four seasons, we have both indoor and outdoor activities year round. Our downtown continues to undergo major renovation and offers a diverse option of food and entertainment. We have a vibrant art, music and both collegiate and professional sports scene.  

Residents can choose to live in either the Greater Cincinnati area or Northern Kentucky. Some of the more popular neighborhoods include Hyde Park, Oakley, Over-The-Rhine and Mt. Lookout. 

Overall, we have strong academics, clinical experience and wonderful people. The anesthesiology residency here at the University of Cincinnati will definitely mold you into a competent well-rounded anesthesiologist, desirable consultant and fellowship candidate and an outstanding person. We are very proud of our residents, faculty and program.
