Program Disclaimer:
Within the next academic year, the Division of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics will merge into the newly named Department of Biostatistics, Health Informatics, and Data Sciences (BHIDS) within the College of Medicine.  This will create a better platform for faculty and students in the Data Sciences to further their research and research opportunities.

The Master of Science and Doctoral programs in Environmental Health-Biostatistics will also merge into BHIDS and undergo a name change to represent the program's new home better.  Future admitted students will be eligible to obtain their degree with the new name if they choose.

Master of Public Health - Biostatistics

The biostatistics concentration of the MPH degree prepares students to take positions as a statistical consultant, a data analyst, or a project manager in health related organizations such as pharmaceutical companies, state and federal health care organizations, research establishments focusing on clinical trials, statistical consulting companies, and academic establishments requiring bio-statistical support. The University of Cincinnati MPH program is a highly competitive graduate degree program accepting candidates who demonstrate capacity and motivation to take positions within local, state, national, and international organizations promoting the health of the public.

Concentration Competencies

Upon completion of the MPH degree in the Biostatistics Concentration students will be able to:

  1. Construct a public health and biomedical research question and convert it into a mathematically sound and statistically testable hypothesis.
  2. Analyze and interpret data from various studies including clinical trials, observational studies and public health surveys.
  3. Apply various statistical models to address various types of data structures and outcome measures.
  4. Adaptively utilize different strength of statistical packages in computation.
  5. Interpret statistical results and findings appropriately and accurately.
  6. Develop written and oral presentations to communicate complicated statistical concepts and results to medical and public health researchers and practitioners, community partners and policymakers effectively.

Program Goals

Graduates of our MPH program with a concentration in Biostatistics will be able to:

  • Apply intermediate to advanced biostatistical theory and techniques to design, plan, and manage data collection to conduct analysis for own research projects or support collaborative research teams.
  • Translate broad research goals into specifications and procedures for statistical analysis and interpretation of results in basic, clinical, translational and public health research studies.
  • Select and use appropriate statistical analysis software for assessment, decision-making and information-sharing (e.g., Stata, SAS, R or other special programs).
  • Communicate statistical methods and findings clearly and unambiguously to specialists and non-specialist audiences.
