About the Division

The Division of Cardiovascular Health and Disease is recognized for its long-standing commitment to patient care, education and research. Representing the only academic medical center in the region, the faculty and staff have been trained in an environment of excellence and understand the importance of offering the highest standard of patient care and advancing future care options through the performance of innovative research.

Patient Care

The Division of Cardiovascular Health and Disease provides patient care in both the hospital and ambulatory settings and takes great pride in offering services for common, complex and rare medical conditions, including coronary artery disease, cardiology critical care, advanced heart failure, refractory arrhythmias, adult congenital heart disease, structural heart disease, valvular heart disease, pericardial disease, heart-related complications of pregnancy, inherited and acquired blood clotting disorders and life-threatening events that include, but are not limited to:

• Complicated Acute Myocardial Infarction
• Ruptured Aortic Aneurysm
• Acute Aortic Dissection and Ulceration
• Threatened Limb Ischemia
• Acute Pulmonary Embolism
• Ventricular Assist Device Complications
• Acute Heart Transplant Rejection
• Refractory Heart Rhythm Abnormalities
• Traumatic Heart Injury

Treatment of life-threatening cardiovascular conditions is provided at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center (UCMC) - a hospital that is recognized nationally and internationally for its emergency medicine, trauma and critical care capabilities that provide the foundation for successful outcomes for critically ill patients.

Our emphasis is on the patient and we employ the highest possible level of performance, quality and outcome metrics to gauge our success - one patient at a time.

The Division of Cardiovascular Health and Disease is actively involved with community programs in diseases, ranging from early onset hypertension, obesity, metabolic syndrome, inherited and acquired blood lipid abnormalities, diabetes, heart failure, heart rhythm abnormalities and coronary artery disease to heart conditions associated with aging, trauma, stress and following chemotherapy.

Our wellness, rehabilitation and recovery programs are a testimony to a strong commitment to prevent heart problems whenever possible and provide state of the art treatment modalities after a condition has developed or an event has occurred to facilitate continued health, a return to work and resumption of normal activities.

The Division has faculty and staff in the following facilities and ambulatory clinics: The University of Cincinnati Medical Center (UCMC), the Cincinnati VA Medical Center (CVAMC), West Chester Hospital (WCH), the UC Health Women’s Center, the Medical Arts Ambulatory Center, the UC Health Medical Office Building North at West Chester Hospital. Future ambulatory expansion will include locations in Florence KY, and Hyde Park.

The use of health information lies at the root of evidence-based treatment in health care. The information and communication technologies available to the Division of Cardiovascular Health and Disease and UCMC are made possible by our strong relationship with the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and the Cincinnati Veterans Administration Medical Center. This provides an unprecedented capacity to deliver modern and affordable health care.

Education

The Division of Cardiovascular Health and Disease, including its faculty, staff and leadership are passionate about education and training of medical students, residents, fellows, nurse practitioners, physician's assistants and nursing students. We have comprehensively and thoughtfully crafted curricula for individuals at all levels of career development, including undergraduate students who are considering a career in science and medicine.

The Clinical Science Training Program, specifically designed for internal medicine residents who are on an investigator track and the Scholars Program for cardiology fellows who are pursuing a career in clinical or translational research are both housed in the Division. We also have training programs for clinical research coordinators.

Our cardiology fellows enjoy a broad range of lectures, conferences, seminars and visiting professor programs and also have direct access to simulators for developing technical skills, including coronary angiography, coronary angioplasty and structural heart disease-related procedures.

Research

The Division's research programs, in close keeping with the tenets and traditions of an academic health center, are driven by discovery, innovation and intervention. Our goal is to advance science and push the boundaries to serve patients.

The Division of Cardiovascular Health and Disease and the Heart, Lung and Vascular Institute have over 100,000 square feet of laboratory space where MD, PhD and MD-PhD scientists work to answer fundamental questions about the heart, lungs and circulatory system and conditions that affect their performance.

Funding for our work comes from the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, American Heart Association and from philanthropy- generous gifts from our grateful patients, families and individuals from the community, region and across the country who value our work and entrust us to find solutions to complex problems through dedicated science and scholarly undertakings. We have all taken a pledge to do so.

The Division of Cardiovascular Health and Disease also conducts clinical and population-based research that serve as the underpinning for safe, effective and affordable drugs and devices that can either prevent or actively treat heart, lung and vascular conditions and diseases.

We believe that an academic environment is ideally suited to conduct clinical research because of several inherent factors that are well known and required for success:

We are proud of our history and the community should also take pride knowing that many nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians assistants, pharmacists, physicians and cardiology sub-specialists received their education and training at UC, its College of Medicine, College of Nursing, College of Pharmacy and within the Division of Cardiovascular Health and Disease.
