Sub-Specialty & Allied Specialty Clinics

Clinic Description:

During the course of their training, fellows have the opportunity to rotate through multiple general endocrine as well as endocrine sub-specialty clinics, thus providing a comprehensive clinical exposure to length and breadth of outpatient endocrinology practice. Various endocrine sub-specialty clinics include the Adrenal Clinic, Bone Diseases Clinic, Diabetes Technology Clinic, Neuroendocrinology Clinic, Thyroid Cancer Clinic and the Transplant Clinic.

The Adrenal Clinic is a subspecialty clinic specifically designated for the evaluation and treatment of patients with various adrenal disorders. It provides an opportunity for fellows to obtain knowledge and experience in treating a variety of adrenal disorders including primary and secondary adrenal insufficiency, primary hyperaldosteronism, Cushing’s syndrome, incidentally discovered adrenal tumors, pheochromocytoma, paraganglioma, adrenocortical carcinoma and genetic syndromes associated with adrenal disorders.

The Bone Clinic provides focused experience in the diagnosis and management of metabolic bone disease, including osteoporosis. Fellows will obtain training in the concepts and practice of effective outpatient endocrine consultation and have training in the evaluation and interpretation of bone density scans.

The Diabetes Technology Clinic focuses primarily on the management of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus through the use of insulin pumps, personal and professional continuous glucose monitors, hybrid closed loop systems, as well as the various software applications used by both patients and our diabetes support staff. Fellows will be expected to interpret pump and sensor data to formulate management plans for their patients. As new technologies become available they will be incorporated into the curriculum, giving fellows the opportunity to get hands on experience with the latest advances in diabetes management.

The Neuroendocrinology Clinic is a multidisciplinary clinic. It is a collaborative effort between Neurosurgery and Endocrinology with a mission to provide state of the art services for patients with pituitary disorders. It is a great platform for the fellows to learn about diagnosis and management of pituitary diseases. Fellows learn about dynamic endocrine testing, interpreting pituitary images, managing both pituitary hormone excess as well as hormone deficiencies. Commonly seen pituitary conditions: Non functioning pituitary adenomas, Prolactinomas, Acromegaly, Cushing's disease, Craniopharyngioma, Rathe's cleft cyst, panhypopituitarism."

The Thyroid Cancer Clinic is a multidisciplinary clinic run collaboratively by the Division of Endocrinology and the Department of Otolaryngology. It provides a focused experience in the diagnosis, evaluation, treatment and longitudinal follow-up of patients with cancer of the thyroid. Patients with sporadic and familial thyroid cancer are referred to this clinic from the tristate area referral base, thus providing our fellows with an invaluable experience in management of low-risk as well as complex high-risk thyroid cancer.  This clinic also provide an opportunity for training in neck ultrasonography for surveillance of thyroid cancer patients.

The Transplant Clinic focuses primarily on evaluation and management of endocrine issues related to solid organ transplants including renal and hepatic transplant patients. Specifically, fellows learn the importance of optimal glycemic control and the selection of diabetes pharmacotherapy in solid organ transplant patients, management of secondary adrenal insufficiency secondary to long term steroid use, evaluation and management of bone loss besides other endocrine disorders in these patients.
