Academic Overview

The UC Division of Infectious Diseases is committed to academic excellence.

Medical student education consists of a third-year clerkship and a four-week intensive clinical experience elective in clinical infectious diseases and HIV care.

Fellowship training includes inpatient and ambulatory rotations, in addition to conferences and grand rounds.

For advanced training, the division offers a fellowship program that trains physicians to become outstanding clinicians or clinician-investigators in infectious diseases.

We provide physicians who have completed their residencies in internal medicine with two years of subspecialty training that is divided between instruction in clinical infectious diseases and research.

We believe that the infectious diseases specialist should be well schooled in research methodologies. For those interested in pursuing a career in academic medicine, we offer an additional year of training.

The fellowship includes training in all clinical aspects of:

• Infectious diseases
• Infection control
• Diagnostic microbiology (bacteriology, virology, mycology and parasitology)
• Clinical or basic laboratory research

At the completion of the fellowship program, all fellows who have passed the Internal Medicine Boards are qualified for the subspecialty examination in infectious diseases administered by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
