Clinical Training & Education

Our goal is to ensure that you have the optimal clinical training and education needed for you to achieve your professional goals in the field of Nephrology. This is accomplished through the following:

Core Inpatient Rotations

There are three core inpatient interdisciplinary consult services that you rotate through during your 2-yr fellowship:

• UC General Nephrology Consult Service
• VA General Nephrology Consult Service
• UC Transplant Nephrology Consult Service

In line with ACGME requirements, you spend a total of 12 months on inpatient service. This allows for the ample remaining time throughout the two years to be spent on Ambulatory, Drake Long-Term Acute Care, and Elective experiences, which are customized based on your interests.

Continuity Clinics

Fellows at this program have the benefit of experiencing one half day clinic in the VA system as well as their own half day continuity clinic at UCMC.   

Didactic Education

Direct didactic instruction by practicing Nephrologists is a critical part of your education and comprises the bulk of your time spent in conference. Conferences are structured to ensure a proper balance between learning and personal time so that comprehension is optimized.

Scholarly Activity

Research and academic pursuit are a key part of the educational values of our program. You have the opportunity to collaborate with nationally recognized Nephrology researchers on a wide variety of clinical outcomes research, such as acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, dialysis, transplantation, and clinical outcomes. We also offer opportunities for basic and translational research on acute and chronic kidney injury, vascular biology, ion-channels and immune regulation, and epithelial transport. 

Local, Regional, and National Conference Attendance

We recognize the importance of local, regional and national conferences on education and future success. You will attend one national conference per year at the least, with opportunities to attend others of your choice.

Third Year Training Opportunities

Your education at UC can continue through the a third year training pathway. We offer third year training in Research and in Transplant Nephrology. In addition, NEW to the institution is an opportunity to pursue a one year Critical Care Fellowship after completing your Nephrology Fellowship training.

Training Sites

The primary sites for your fellowship training are the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and the Cincinnati VA Medical Center. UCMC is a 726 bed primary teaching hospital that allows for exposure to a diverse acute care experience including the Medical ICU (MICU), Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU), Surgical ICU (SICU), Neuro ICU (NICU). There are tremendous opportunities for learning dialysis modalities, including: CVVH/CVVHD modalities utilizing NxStage CRRT machines and inpatient hemodialysis & peritoneal dialysis. In addition, we have numerous teaching cases requiring Plasmapheresis. To learn more about UCMC.

Additional training sites include the Daniel Drake Center for Post-Acute Care and local dialysis units.
