In the first year of residency you will learn acute inpatient and consultative medicine. You will experience patient-centered general medicine teams, subspecialty teams (cardiology, nephrology, gastroenterology), and intensive care units.
We set the PGY-1 year up so you will rotate on a 4+2 basis (four weeks of inpatient services alternating with 2 weeks of elective time or vacation). This allows you to decompress after each intense inpatient elective.
You will develop progressive autonomy under the supervision of senior residents, fellows and attendings. You will also gain skills in teaching and evaluation.
Our general medicine teams have no more than 12-14 patients per team, and the subspecialty teams have no more than 16. University Hospital uses the EPIC electronic medical record and the VAMC uses CPRS (switching to Cerner in Spring of 2023).
A typical schedule for a PGY-1 resident includes:

Subspecialty Wards (nephrology,gastroenterology, cardiology, neurology)
