Mission and History of Molecular and Cellular Biosciences

erlenmyer-extravaganzaVision

The long-term departmental vision is to train the next generation of scientists and to link our research to human disease and translational applications.

Mission

To promote globally competitive undergraduate, graduate and professional programs that feature interdisciplinary inquiry and foster intellectual curiosity. These programs will promote knowledge and skill acquisition by providing outstanding, innovative and experiential training to our students, and preparing them for a diversity of biomedical-related career paths.

The department will house basic science faculty members and students who advance the development and implementation of cutting-edge molecular, genetic and biochemical methodologies in the pursuit of a mechanistic understanding of molecular and cellular processes.

History

The Department of Molecular & Cellular Biosciences is one of the four basic science departments at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and was founded in the early 1920’s. The department as it currently stands represents a merger of the Department of Biochemistry/Molecular Biology and Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology and was formerly known as the Department of Molecular Genetics, Biochemistry and Microbiology (Molgen). In 2022 the name of the Department was changed to Molecular and Cellular Biosciences to better reflect the research interests of the Faculty.
