Fetal Care Program

About the Program

The Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine's Fetal Care Program is a one-half day primary subspecialty clinic session designed to care for pregnant women with fetal conditions that require treatment through the Fetal Care Center of Cincinnati, a joint program with the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital.

The Fetal Care Center of Cincinnati is one of the busiest in the world and, as defined by surgical and therapeutic procedures, it is the busiest in the United States.

Patients are sent from across the United States and many foreign countries to the Fetal Care Center of Cincinnati to see the fetal surgeons and one of the members of the UC Maternal-Fetal Medicine team. The physicians for the program are CCH Pediatric Surgery, CCH Neonatology, UC Health MFM faculty and Tri-Health MFM physicians.

Each evaluation typically requires a fetal surgeon and a maternal-fetal medicine specialist working together to make the best decision for therapy. In-take evaluations occur every day as necessary. Surgeries are performed on days in which intakes are not taken.

Urgent surgeries are frequently performed at odd hours, nights, weekends and on dates that intake evaluations are already scheduled.

Follow-up care may take place in the outpatient clinics at the Hoxworth Women’s Center. Fetal care patients also often require inpatient evaluation and/or prolonged hospital care at UC Health University Hospital.
