Intern Community Service 2018

Diversity and Inclusion

We acknowledge the unequal burden that minority students face, striving to excel while battling bias, discrimination and legacies of racial trauma in the medical profession.  We as the medical community must do better to create a climate where minority students, residents and faculty are safe, respected, heard and valued.

As a program we value diversity and celebrate our differences.  We feel learning from one another allows us to be better physicians and citizens.  We recruit diverse students to our program, not just to reflect the patient population we treat but to broaden our understanding of the human experience.

We have been intentional in our efforts to recruit diverse students over the years and have enjoyed much success, however recruitment is only the beginning.  Just as important is how we support and mentor trainees that have  joined our program.  Back in 2016 one of our psychiatry residents co-founded the UCMC Minority House Staff Association, a multi-specialty group to enhance the sense of community and support among our under-represented house staff across our institution.  This organization started by two women, has grown to over 50 members.  The group works to support one another across specialties, create community through various social and community engagement events, and to recruit exceptional prospective applicants.  More information can be found at https://sites.google.com/view/cincinnati-mha/home. We have also collaborated with our institution's Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion on several projects. They are committed to increasing the number of qualified under-represented minority medical students, residents, and faculty at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine through recruitment and retention programing. ODEI is under the leadership of Associate Dean Mia Mallory, MD, and Assistant Dean Lisa Johnson, MD. More information can be found on the ODEI website.

ODEI hosts a Diversity Second Look Event every year to introduce you to our diverse residents and faculty, as well as showcase our city and demonstrate the health disparities in Cincinnati.

Aside from networking and support our faculty mentorship has led to national recognition of our minority residents including selection for the prestigious SAMHSA Minority Fellowship, Nyapati Rao and Francis Lu International Medical Graduate (IMG) Fellowship and other national awards.
