About the Program

Neuroradiology in the Department of Radiology at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center is a one-year ACGME accredited fellowship in neuroradiology.

Fellows are exposed to cutting edge technology and superb case material. The large patient population allows the fellow to gain experience in the full continuum of neuroradiologic examinations, procedures and interpretations.

Fellows share imaging and procedure responsibilities.

The rotations include ENT (4 weeks), advanced imaging (4 weeks), pediatric neuroradiology (4 weeks at CCHMC), spine procedures (4 weeks), elective (4 weeks) and interventional neuroradiology (3 weeks). There is flexibility in the schedule to tailor the fellows’ interests. The fellows are allocated half a day of academic time per week on average.

Why train at UC?

The Section of Neuroradiology has a high volume of patients with a large variety of neurological, neurosurgical, ophthalmologic, otorhinolaryngologic, and spinal and other pertinent disorders which contribute to a well-rounded learning experience.  UCMC’s neurosciences are nationally recognized for their achievements in stroke intervention, neuro-oncology, skull base tumors, neurovascular therapy, functional neurosurgery and epilepsy. 

Additional subspecialty trained experts in spine surgery, neuro-ophthalmology and head and neck surgery provide a broad patient base.  UCMC is a Level I trauma center with a nationally recognized emergency medicine program.  All of these resources provide a large volume of invasive procedures including neuroangiography, myelography and interventional procedures as well as noninvasive examinations such as MR, CT and plain film radiography.

Our goal is to produce excellent neuroradiologists, with a strong clinical background, based upon daily exposure to recognized leaders in the field, advanced technology and a widely diverse patient population.

Our program offers trainees state-of-the-art equipment and facilities and access to:

• Internationally recognized Stroke program - a collaborative effort between Neuroradiology, Emergency Medicine and Neurology.
• Cutting edge technology and state-of-the art equipment.
• Advanced imaging rotation with specific participation (spectroscopy, perfusion and functional MRI/DTI) and review of CT angiography in the Advanced 3-D Imaging Laboratory.
• One of the most internationally acclaimed pediatric hospitals is Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. It is also recognized for its Pediatric Neuroradiology program.
• Spine procedures rotation at UCMC, West Chester Hospital and UC Gardner Neuroscience Institute.
• Large and diverse patient population.
• Strong didactic teaching program with multi-disciplinary exposure to Neurology, Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology, Pediatric Neuroradiology, Nuclear Radiology and Neuro-oncology.
• Dedicated academic/research time and exposure to fundamentals of experimental design, performance and interpretation of results with access to departmental statistician and access to research space and laboratory facilities.

Eight neuroradiologists and 3 neuro-interventionalists are on staff at the UC Medical Center, including seven full-time and one part-time faculty.

All faculty are fellowship trained and all faculty members spend 100 percent of their professional time in Neuroradiology. All faculty members hold academic positions in the Department of Radiology. Additional pediatric neuroradiologists are on staff at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and provide instruction in pediatric neuroradiology.

All faculty participate in didactic teaching and direct supervision of trainee performance.

The Neuroradiology Division benefits from strong departments in and good cooperation with Neurosurgery, Neurology, Otolaryngology, and Neuropathology.

Multiple intradepartmental as well as numerous multidisciplinary conferences are given routinely.  Neuroradiology fellows are expected to attend and participate in the majority of weekly neuroscience conferences.  In additional neuroradiology fellows supervise/conduct monthly conferences for the radiology residents. Regular multidisciplinary conferences include: neurocritical care conference, neuro-oncology tumor board, head and neck tumor board, epilepsy surgery conference, skull base conference, headache conference, and stroke team meeting. Pediatric neuroradiology conference is available through CCHMC.

Three fellowship positions are available each year.

A separate one-year pediatric neuroradiology fellowship is also available through Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.
