Academic Overview

The Division of Digestive Diseases takes an active role in educating medical students, residents and fellows on the clinical and research aspects of gastroenterology, hepatology, pancreatology and advanced endoscopy. 

For medical students, we offer a number of fourth-year electives, covering nearly every aspect of digestive disease disorders. This includes participation in outpatient and inpatient consultation, endoscopic procedures, lectures, conferences and grand rounds.

Residents spend considerable time during their training rotating through the Hepatology Inpatient Service, GI Consult Service, and Ambulatory GI Clinics. In addition, there are many other Digestive Diseases electives and training opportunities.

For those looking to enhance their training beyond residency, the Division of Digestive Diseases offers fellowship training programs in Gastroenterology/Hepatology and Transplant Hepatology.

The GI program is among the oldest fellowship programs in the United States and has a long and distinguished history of producing superbly trained specialists in digestive diseases. The program trains gastroenterologists and hepatologists who will maintain lifelong scholarly interests in the pathophysiology and treatment of gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary disorders.

The Transplant Hepatology Fellowship Program is an ACGME-accredited training program closely affiliated with UC Health University Hospital, the only liver transplant center in southwestern Ohio.

The one-year fellowship program provides trainees who have already completed a GI fellowship with individualized experience in the management of pre- and post-transplant patients, care of patients with end-stage liver disease and fulminant hepatic failure, assessment of the candidacy of patients for liver transplantation and performance of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures (e.g., liver biopsy, EGD with band ligation of varices). Fellows may also choose to do their Transplant Hepatology during their 3rd year of GI fellowship. This allows them to be board eligible in Gastroenterology & Transplant Hepatology at the end of their 3 years of training.
