Academic Overview

The Division of General Internal Medicine provides a substantial amount of the medical student and resident teaching for the Department of Internal Medicine. Our division staff two of the General Internal Medicine Ward Teams at the UC Medical Center.

For medical students, the division offers a third-year Internal Medicine clerkship program and several fourth-year elective courses, focusing on primary care and outpatient/ambulatory medical care. Students are also forwarded the opportunity to attend internal medicine lectures, conferences, and grand rounds. Division faculty are also responsible for medical residents’ continuity clinic and for the ambulatory component of the third-year Internal Medicine clerkship. Our members of the division have led the movement to innovate the continuity clinic through our long block program.

• Significant involvement in the Department of Internal Medicine IMSTAR Fellowship, training programs and medical education in outcomes research.
• Leading the academic health center’s involvement in numerous other quality agendas including CMS Primary Care First initiative, CPC+ initiative involving Medicaid patients and the ACE (Achieving Cardiovascular Equity) Project with the Ohio Department of Health.
• Leaders in residency medical education, including assessments and quality improvement initiatives.

Beyond their contributions to the clinical training of our medical students and residents, our faculty plays a major emphasis on nurturing their interests in developing academic careers. Medical students and residents are encouraged to develop either clinical vignettes or research presentations to enter competitions in numerous regional and national meetings.

Year after year our students and residents have had abstracts accepted at venues including the regional and national annual meetings of the Society of General Internal Medicine and the American College of Physicians.
