The UC Division of Nephrology and Hypertension Program is fully engaged in educating medical students, residents and fellows in all aspects of renal disease, physiology, kidney and pancreas transplantation and hypertension.
Medical students benefit from a second year “renal block”, followed by third and fourth-year elective courses in clinical nephrology and transplant nephrology. These courses allow students to encounter all facets of nephrology: acute and chronic renal failure, fluid and electrolyte disorders, peritoneal and hemodialysis, etc.
Residents benefit from rotations including consults, renal ward, and ambulatory training. In addition, the program can design customized or “boutique electives” catering to the residents interests. The training sites primarily include UCMC and VA locations. The program also takes a strong interest in resident education, and actively participates in didactic training, M&M conferences, and morning reports focused on acute and chronic kidney disorders.
For specialized training, the Division of Nephrology offers an ACGME accredited fellowship program that provides comprehensive educational experience in all aspects of clinical nephrology, including kidney diseases, fluid-electrolyte and acid-base disorders, organ transplantation, hypertension and interventional nephrology.
The training program combines consolidation of clinical experience with an opportunity to participate in clinical or laboratory investigation. This approach allows us to tailor the training program depending on the interest of the candidates. For example, the diversity of clinical opportunities helps the majority of fellows who are planning a career in clinical nephrology, along with providing them exciting opportunities to learn transplantation and interventional nephrology.
For those interested primarily in an academic career including education and research, the program can support additional years of training. During the second year, fellows have the opportunities to pursue and prepare for intramural as well as extramural funding. Fellows are also provided with one-on-one mentoring opportunities and are encouraged to conduct projects that can be presented at regional or national scientific meetings.
The division also hosts one to two annual symposia, which involves nationally recognized speakers. These educational symposia are a resource to trainees and physicians from within our institution and the community as well as regional institutions. We also are proud that our faculties contribute to support the National Kidney Foundation, Cincinnati Chapter in their efforts to raise awareness about kidney disease in the community.
