Established in 2004, the Advanced Image Processing Lab is located in the Radiology Department at University Hospital and operates Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with on-call availability on weekends.

The Advanced Image Processing Lab processes advanced imaging procedures that are scanned at the UC Health Medical Arts Building, University of Cincinnati Medical Center, Drake Center, UC Health West Chester Hospital, and the Cincinnati VA Medical Center. Via network, all scans that require processing are sent directly to the Advanced Image Processing lab to be post-processed then sent to the PACS system for radiologist’s interpretation and clinician review.

The Advanced Image Processing lab uses state-of-the-art post-processing techniques that the referring clinicians have come to expect. Radiology fellows and residents incorporate a rotation in the Advanced Image Processing lab as part of their curriculum along with students in the Radiology Technology program.

Working directly with the radiology faculty, the Advanced Image Processing staff helps develop, implement and assist in maintaining all routine and advanced CT protocols.

We also assist our faculty with research projects, educational exhibits, publications and lectures that involve imaging studies.

Technologists in the Advanced Image Processing lab are members of local, state and national medical imaging societies and have been invited to give presentations at all levels on Advanced Image Processing post-processing techniques and applications.

The technologists in the Advanced Image Processing lab post-process CT and MR cases from all clinical practices, including orthopedics ,cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, neurovascular surgery, urology and vascular surgery.

The Advanced Image Processing lab staff has direct interaction with physicians in reviewing the volumetric CT data set and discussing the post-processing techniques that were utilized.

The team also interacts with the technologists to assist in pre-procedural preparation of cardiac CTA, brain perfusion and CTA studies to obtain high-quality scans for optimal post-processing results.

While many CT and MR exams are post-processed in our lab, the most common is the CT angiogram (CTA). A CTA study is an exam that uses the volumetric data obtained by helical CT to demonstrate the vascular system in any area of the body from the head, neck, chest, cardiac, abdomen, pelvis and extremities. This is performed most commonly to assist in the diagnosis of vascular disease, injury or plan surgery.

The Advanced Image Processing lab also processes cardiac MR, prostate spectroscopy, CT brain perfusion and CT programs and performs tumor/organ volume calculations for physician review.
