The section of plastic, reconstructive and hand surgery/burn surgery offers expert care across the entire spectrum of reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. Collaborative efforts with other divisions contribute to improved patient outcomes and increased educational opportunities. The Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgery residency was given full 5-year accreditation by the ACGME in 2012.
The section provides state-of-the-art care including complex wound management, breast reconstruction after mastectomy, as well as reconstructive surgery following trauma, brachial plexus, burns and weight loss. The division continues its collaborative effort with the UC Health Drake Center, Cincinnati’s primary rehabilitation hospital.
UC Health Plastic Surgery includes a dynamic clinical and translational research group at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Ongoing work performed by the group on bone engineering from adipose-derived stem cells and on minimally invasive craniofacial surgery has been presented at both national and international plastic surgery meetings.
The section provides high-quality innovative care for the treatment of burns in children and adults. Expert care from the burn and plastic/reconstructive surgeons makes the University Hospital Burn Center and the Shriners Burns Hospital Cincinnati a major referral center for burn victims in the Midwest. The University Hospital Burn Center provides comprehensive burn care for adult patients. In addition, a burn walk-in center is located on the unit for the evaluation of patients with minor acute burns and/or special needs such as toxic epidermal necrolysis, soft tissue necrosis, necrotizing skin and soft tissue infections, and problem wounds.
