About the Division

The UC Division of Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology was founded in 1969 by Evelyn Hess, MD in collaboration with I. Leonard Bernstein. The division consists of two sections: Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology. We share common interests and a common tripartite mission: exemplary patient care in our respective fields, basic and clinical translation research from the bench to the bedside, and educating the future generation of rheumatologists/immunologists and allergists.

Patient care is performed at several locations throughout the tri-state region including the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, The Veterans Administration Hospital, and UC Health facilities at Midtown, West Chester and White Oak location.  We have fifteen rheumatologists and six allergists on staff.

The division has well-established collaborative research programs with the UC Department of Environmental Health, the Division of Allergy and Immunology at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, the UC College of Engineering and Applied Science; and the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health/Centers for Disease Control (NIOSH/CDC).

Ongoing programmatic research is funded through numerous NIH grant awards from NIOSH/CDC, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). Special areas of emphasis include mechanisms of anaphylaxis, B-cell and cytokine biology, occupational lung disease, air pollution, childhood allergy, and lupus nephritis.

Separate fellowship training programs are offered for Rheumatology/Immunology and Allergy. Both training programs have strong clinical experience coupled with funded-research opportunities. This allows the Division to prepare well-rounded fellows for careers in patient care, research and academic medicine.
