Academic Overview

Along with its research and patient care focus, the Division of Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology is committed to teaching.

Medical student education consists of a third-year clerkship and an eight-week intensive clinical experience elective in arthritis/allergy.

The elective course prepares fourth-year students to perform primary care management, including the diagnosis and treatment of common rheumatologic and allergic medical disorders.

Training of residents consists of a one-month rotation with ambulatory and inpatient consultations as well as structured didactic sessions.

The rheumatology/immunology rotation is one of the most highly sought after rotations by residents due to the organization, the dedicated lecture series and the faculty teaching. The division also offers a one-month rotation focusing on allergy/immunology.

For specialized training, the division offers separate fellowship training programs in allergy/immunology and rheumatology. Both training programs are partially funded through NIH T32 training grant awards that prepare fellows for careers in research and academic medicine.
